   Academic Programmes

Mukhanyo Theological College has a vision to equip church leaders on a variety of levels in order to serve Christian churches in Africa. This vision is achieved by providing relevant, high quality, holistic, affordable, training opportunities to local church and community leaders; by developing church leadership and administrative skills in those who are willing to learn; and by empowering church leaders in their local ministries to act as a catalyst for development aid projects and mercy ministries.

Mukhanyo presently has one campus located in KwaMhlanga, Mpumalanga, close to the government and other administrative buildings, and we are also offering church based training with future expansion in Braamfontein, Johannesburg a block from the Gautrain station.

Theological Education Programmes
Mukhanyo offers theological education at several levels of learning. There are four programmes for training in church leadership:
  • The Certificate Programme provides a simple biblical foundation for academic learning and Christian character. This programme is at least a 1 year programme which is open to all students with a credible Christian profession. Instruction at this level is not accredited but offered as church-based training. Students who pass this course are allowed entrance into the next level of learning.
  • The Diploma in Theology provides a systematic introduction to major areas of theological study, including both academic study and practical application of biblical truth. It is designed as a foundational programme for church leaders, serving as preparation for further academic studies. This at least a 2 year programme is open to all students with a credible Christian profession.
  • The Bachelors in Pastoral Theology Degree provides a comprehensive study of all aspects of theology, including both the academic research and practical application of biblical truth. It is designed to prepare church leaders for all aspects of Christian ministry. This 4 year programme is open to all male candidates with credible Christian profession who are called by God into the pastoral ministry of the Word and leadership in the Church.
  • The Bachelors of Arts Honours in Theology Degree (BA Hons) provides active church leaders with further instruction in academic research and practical application of biblical truth in the context of Christian ministry. This programme is open to all male pastoral ministry students with a credible Christian profession. It is ideally suited for those with prior experience as pastors in a local Christian church.

Continuing Teacher Education Programme
Continuing Teacher Education Programmes for teachers are offered in collaboration with North West University (NWU) and the Academy for the Professional Enhancement of Educators (APEE). The following programmes are offered:
  • National Professional Teachers Diploma (NPTD)
  • Advanced Certificate in Education (ACE)
  • BEd Honours (Bed Hons)
The programmes are offered on designated Saturdays.

Students register with NWU at Mukhanyo in KwaMhlanga, submit assignments to NWU at Mukhanyo in KwaMhlanga, and sit for NWU exams at Mukhanyo in KwaMhlanga. Mukhanyo will offer classes (contact sessions) in KwaMhlanga to assist students according to requirements provided by NWU.

Mukhanyo Distance programme extends the reach of the college far beyond the circumferences of both the KwaMhlanga and Johannesburg locations. The Certificate and Diploma in Theology programmes are offered.

Workshops are also offered to equip evangelists, Sunday School teachers, elders and deacons and also workshops to refresh and encourage preachers.

  Mukhanyo Distance

Mukhanyo Theological College has been providing Bible instruction to church leaders for more than fifteen years. High-quality and Reformed Bible teaching with contextual application has been given to hundreds of church leaders. But we can only reach those who live within traveling distance of the college. Some have come from greater distances, but this increases the overall costs and ineffectiveness of education. Church leaders should not be required to come to us. We are now bringing the education to you.

Mukhanyo Distance is designed to do this. The goal remains the same:
(a) to equip church leaders (pastors, church members, church communities) with in-service training in their own ministry context;

(b) to help churches provide quality discipleship and biblical training;

(c) to provide quality academic content in an acceptable format that also addresses the importance of a godly Christian character and the immediate contextual application of what is learned.

There are three important parts to the Mukhanyo Distance programme in providing a stable learning platform:

DVD Courses: We offer videos of actual lectures at Mukhanyo together with a study guide and/or textbook. This provides the delivery of high-quality Reformed content at the same level of learning as on Mukhanyo's campus. It also ensures that the content is not changed in any way before it is taught.

Group Learning: It is difficult to study when you are all alone. There is a high 'drop out' rate when studying alone. But learning is much easier, productive and rewarding when studying in groups. This provides an environment for discussion, debate and encouragement with your fellow students. These learning groups will form naturally when local church leaders around Africa gather to watch DVD courses together. Group learning also encourages churches to come together, enhancing unity and co-operation at various levels.

Local Tutors: The facilitator/tutor will be a suitably qualified, experienced person who watches the DVDs together with the students. This person will coordinate the learning with Mukhanyo's administration and provide support, guidance, and encouragement to the students.

This model of distribution very effective for learning, but it also lowers the overall cost of biblical education by bringing Bible instruction to church leaders in their own ministry contexts. This model would not have worked in the past, but now DVD technology is available almost everywhere in Africa. We need to take advantage of new technology to be more effective in training African pastors and churches.

What are we offering?
Reformed Content
The content is biblical and seeks to promote the ongoing reformation of the church in Africa.

Accreditation
Mukhanyo Theological College is accredited by the South African government. The College is registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training as a private higher education institution under the Higher Education Act, 1997, Registration Certificate No. 2009/HE08/002. Therefore, Mukhanyo Distance is able to provide the same recognition to students as on-campus students with the appropriate assessments.

Visual
Visual: DVD format - Study material is structured around classes of experienced lecturers, providing study content in a visual learning experience.
In field Tutors: group study with a facilitator in the field, providing localized discipleship and themes for discussion.
